Modern, free public transport

In Cottbus, sustainable transport development is to be driven forward, focusing on the promotion of cycle paths, the expansion of local transport and the creation of bicycle car parks. A well-developed network of cycle paths would enable residents to use the bicycle as an environmentally friendly alternative and relieve traffic congestion.

At the same time, local transport is to be made more attractive with modern buses (green hydrogen and electric) and trams, with tightly synchronised timetables and comprehensive coverage of the city area.
In addition, bicycle car parks are to be built at strategic locations (not just at the main railway station), providing secure parking facilities, service facilities such as repair stations and charging stations for e-bikes.

Another important element is the creation of free local public transport. As a first step, this is to be provided for school pupils, students, trainees and later for all residents.

The holistic implementation of this strategy will make Cottbus a more liveable, socially just and future-oriented city in which sustainable mobility is a high priority.

Bicycle parking spaces and bicycle car parks

More space must be created for bikes with child trailers or cargo bikes.
The expansion of secure parking spaces and multi-storey car parks is a step in this direction.

Smart city infrastructure and smart mobility

The smart city title can be felt in city life. Optimisations in this area include intelligent city lighting and parking systems, but also the possibilities of digital services such as real-time tracking in local public transport, car sharing and a wide range of app integrations.

Public transport – Park&Ride

The city has a problem with congested roads at peak times. According to the commuter atlas[1], there are around 61,000 commuters in Cottbus.  They all have the choice between travelling by bike, car or public transport. On weekdays alone, 23,400 people stream into the city centre from the surrounding area.  The public transport connections are sometimes miserable. For car drivers, there is neither a parking guidance system nor sufficient P+R car parks in the city area.
