Topic sustainability

Local development in the transformation process

Sustainability is a major topic of our time and, especially during the ongoing transformation process in the structural change, harbours options to help shape local development.

We see various concepts as worthy of being pursued in Cottbus.
Power generation and storage, whether on a commercial or private scale, is definitely an important point in the organisation of the coming years.

The provision of areas for solar power generation, for example on covered car parks, public buildings or the domestic sector, can be achieved through appropriate measures. Information on wind and solar power plants on domestic balconies needs to be expanded, for example through information hotlines for tenants and by highlighting funding opportunities. Of course, this goes hand in hand with the urgently needed expansion of the associated infrastructure (including in the digital sector) and the trialling of new concepts in electricity storage.

A car-free city centre benefits both tourism and the sense of community in the city centre. The resulting space can be used to support modern mobility concepts, for example through designated parking spaces for two-wheelers and cargo bikes as well as the urgently needed expansion of cycle paths. In this context, we are in favour of removing rental scooters from the cityscape or regulating them more strictly, for example by providing fixed parking spaces, in order to ensure greater accessibility and safety in traffic. Finally, local public transport must be geared more towards the needs of citizens. Closer co-operation with the BTU’s urban planning faculty should definitely be sought.

Especially in the vicinity of municipal buildings, the city can set a good example and provide charging facilities for electric mobility.

The expansion of green spaces and gardens, possibly even for communal use, and the promotion of rooftop planting will make the cityscape more attractive and provide the opportunity to expand and consolidate existing networks.

Balcony power stations

Rising energy prices and the energy transition are currently on everyone’s lips. Despite the broad public interest in these issues, the majority of people are highly dependent on decisions and developments in these areas without being able to influence them directly. We want to change this!

Even without subsidies, a balcony power plant (everyone’s power plant) can pay for itself after just 4-6 years and thus contribute to relieving the financial burden on citizens and the energy transition.

In addition to the many private landlords, condominiums and other housing associations, the municipal GWC alone has around 17,000 flats and many other commercial properties in its portfolio. The majority of these are suitable for the use of balcony power plants.
We want to continue to promote this and encourage citizens to participate in the energy transition.
How should this work?

1. authorisation and approval of the installation of a balcony power plant by GWC at the tenant’s request in accordance with existing building regulations
2. contact persons should be established at the GWC to assist with the application process
3. citizens should be informed about funding opportunities.

4. we would like to advocate a municipal funding programme.
