Integration and migration

From fear to possibilities

The SUB is committed to an open society. Regardless of origin, the right to free development, the pursuit of a learned and meaningful activity and the authorisation to do so are enshrined in the Basic Law. As citizens of this city, we should all share the opportunity to help shape it. This requires dialogue and the inclusion of interest groups, even if they are often among the unheard. We are endeavouring to shift the focus of discussion away from fears and towards opportunities for productive coexistence.

Expanded support for integrative social work is essential, as is the provision of spaces that allow cultural and religious organisations to pursue their interests. Resources are already available, but need to be uncovered and utilised, primarily by breaking down prejudices and resentments through dialogue-based work, but also by reducing bureaucratic hurdles as far as possible at local level.

In the international-academic context in particular, Cottbus offers outstanding potential for dealing with cultural diversity and enriching voices for the creation of open structures. Speech cafés and courses are predestined for this
