Presentation of the RLS study with
- Steven Hummel (political scientist, co-author of the above-mentioned study, project manager for educational work at the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung Saxony, volunteer at the documentation and research platform chronik.LE aktiv)
- Anika Taschke (Political scientist, co-author of the above-mentioned study, consultant for neo-Nazism and structures/ideologies of inequality at the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation)
Since the summer interview with CDU chairman Friedrich Merz in July 2023 at the latest, there has been much discussion about the relationship with the AfD. Does the firewall, i.e. the strict demarcation, also hold at municipal level? Is it even necessary there or is it all about factual politics?
Political scientists Anika Taschke and Steven Hummel are investigating these and other questions in a study to be published by the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung in March 2024. Between summer 2019 and the end of 2023, they were able to identify 121 cases of cooperation between extreme right-wing parties/factions and democratic parties/factions at municipal level in eastern Germany. The decisive factor here is joint voting behavior.
The event will discuss the results of the study and take a look at the local situation. Together with local actors, we would like to discuss the following questions: How can the far right be dealt with in local parliaments? What is the actual situation on the ground? Which civil society actors are needed and what strategies are needed (now) to counter the shift to the right?
